Briefly analysed
The WorkingOutLoud principal calls to talk about one’s own work and share one’s own knowledge with others. We make our own work and ourselves visible. Through mutual exchange we can better collaborate with other professionals. Science and technology communicator Silke Kamprich applies the concept to SciComm: ScienceOutLoud. This helps communication by creating transparency.
Visibility We can only enter a relationship with another person if we know him or her well, right? Relationships also help SciComm. For this we should tell about our work on a professional level. This way we create transparency and attention.
Wouldn’t it be nice if more people share their knowledge? It has never been so easy to do that. These days everyone can talk about their work. But what is the use of that? By telling others about your work, you make it visible. Everyone can benefit from your knowledge and yourself from the expertise of others. By learning from each other, we can work better together – also in science communication. The concept is known as WorkingOutLoud.
Silke Kramprich is a science and technology communicator. She has tried out the concept and is enthusiastic about it. In her opinion, WOL can be applied well to science communication. Under the #ScienceOutLoud she gives a guide on how the concept improves science communication [1].
For inexperienced communicators, ScienceOutLoud – SOL gives interesting suggestions. She describes in her article on Linkedin [2] how scientists build a network that remains steadfast throughout their career. Contacts should no longer only be collected at conferences, instead sustainable relationships should be formed.
By communicating “out loud”, the work of scientists becomes transparent. Trust is built. In addition, colleagues develop a better understanding of each other’s processes and can thus work better together. This helps to communicate science better.
Info – Who is behind the concept
John Stepper coined the original WorkingOutLoud concept to help companies build a culture of community. He wants everyone to value each other. This works better when everyone knows about each other’s work. This way you can be more effective because everyone benefits from the knowledge of others.
The concept can be learned with a free program of one hour per week. The program is limited to twelve weeks. You have to be in a circle. This is a group of four to five people. Learning takes place together with them. The people within the circle are supposed to build a relationship with each other. This way, everyone can benefit.
